There are some platforms, notably AIX that do not support a feature like LD_PRELOAD to enable runsocks to work. There is no way to make socks support to work other than linking it in into the main executable statically. I also do work on AIX quite often, and I had to add socks support every time to be able to access open source repositories via the pserver protocol across the corporate firewall.
