You're getting a language code back instead of an encoding (second argument). My machine (FC4) returns the right encoding for your locale, as do both debian machines I've checked. One of the debian machines lists "3.1" in /etc/debian_version, is that what you get? Can you give the output of the following: python -c "import sys; print sys.stdin.encoding" python -c "import locale; print locale.getpreferredencoding()" Ross
