What does bitkeeper moving away from free mean for me?: msg#00006version-control.bitkeeper.user
I'm sorry if I'm asking a really stupid question, but after reading the news articles and press releases, I still don't exactly know what's going on. I have a good general understanding that Bitmover is strategically ending development of the current free version of bitkeeper, and that its being 'cycled out'. I currently have two open source projects hosted on bkbits. In addition to being open source, these projects are completely non-commercial in nature, they are being used to conduct academic research for telescopes and computational biology. I have trained a mathematician who refused to use CVS or any other kind of versioning system to use Bitkeeper due to its amazing power-to-simplicity ratio. He's even successfully pushed his own changes to a code we were working on up to bkbits. If I understand correctly, in the future we will be given a client that will allow free pull/clone access to bkbits/other repositories, but the ability to create changesets and commit them will be available only to a professional version. So assuming I do have two projects that will continue to be developed in the next 4 years during the remainder of my term as a graduate student, what are my options? I'd also like to express my appreciation for such a great product, you guys make version control fun. Best Wishes, ~Aron Ahmadia
