Sorry, fooled you. :) This is a symptom of bash trying to interpret the
BKD protocol. Wayne pointed out the real problem: the URL is in the
wrong format.
I'll see if I can cook up a decent way for us to check this case and say
"hey, that's a bad URL" rather than this mystifying failure mode.
