I think you missed the key point. The distributed nature of the system
means you don't have control over what's happening in a different tree.
And when you merge the two...you don't have control over the resulting
version numbers in the merged tree.
Seems to me, using tags is the only way you'll keep sane pointers to old
versions ;-)
