Thanks Tom -- that will be useful.  Some of my machines are used for
OS support and getting the "right" version of the standard utilities
is important.  Pity that all vendors don't include 'z' option support
in tar and unified diffs.  *sigh*

Wrappers etc as you note are easy workarounds.
