  may be SE linux enabled , give commnad # setenforce 0 and now try to connect 
mysql
  if connects check SELinux policies on security.

"you could not open it" i assume you mean to say that
you are not able to connect. did you started the mysql
server / is the mysql service running ? try  out this 

#mysqld_safe --user=mysql 2>&1 >/dev/null &

now try connection mysql
