Boot problem: msg#00068

Subject: Boot problem
Hi ,

I am running debian unstable on Acer laptop. Things were working fine
until yesterday morning, when the laptop refused to boot.

The errors i am getting are strange:

- If i run in the regular boot level, the system boots, but for some
reason does not mount the /usr or /home(both reiserfs). Mount says
that it does not know type reiserfs. It also failed to load ide_*
modules. Similarly all the devices fail to initialise. After a while
i get a shell with only /(ext3) as mounted.

Every 5 minutes i get the message "INIT: Id "SV" respawning too fast,
disabled for 5 minutes. I can,t check the logs because my /var is on
/home.

- When i try to boot into init=1 , i get a Kernel Panic which says:
"/usr/lib/yaird/exec/run_init:1: No such file.
Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!"

- Windows seems to work fine.(dual boot)

Similarly no run level seems to work.

I tried googling a bit and the possible reasons were:

- Harddisk failure : tested all partitions except / and found no bad
blocks. I tried using badblocks <partition mame>. Is this test good
enough? How do i test the root partition for badblocks?
- RAM : Checked with memtest. Looks good

- Rootkit: Read somewhere that someone has installed a rootkit on my
machine. I can't check this, but is there such a possibility. The only
way if anyone can install it is via an irc, but i feel that it is
secure. How can i check this, since i cant run ant rootkit detection
programs.
- Corrupt files in /boot like system.map etc.. I am not sure how to test it.

Any pointers will be helpful. Also, is this likely to be a hardware
failure or a linux corruption?

-Suman
