I have found that gpm and X don't play nice together.
I remember reading somewhere to unload gpm before launching X.
Maybe they have fixed that, but I know it used to be an issue.
Anyway, logic dictates only one program can have physical
control of the mouse at a time.
Not true. My laptop has both a USB optical mouse and a touchpad and BOTH work
equally INSIDE X with XFCE 4. But, your problem may be, as Johnathan said,
with gpm. You may need to find and alternative to gpm or open links in a
terminal that has gpm disabled if that is possible. Either way, a good test
would be to disable gpm and then run links to see if it has mouse controls
built in. And for X, you could have in your start up scripts to disable gpm in
the tty that X runs in. Hope this makes sense.
