[OT] Networking...: msg#00335user-groups.linux.ilug.general
Was on a client site yesterday to add a second network device in an office that had a single patch point going back to the "server room" downstairs (Heh.. under the stairs actually). I didnt particularly want to pull cables, so I thought I'd cheat, and downgrade the existing, and the new device to 10BaseT, and do a 4 wire cabling job to both devices, splitting the existing 8 wire Cat5 at each end, and wiring for the yellow and green pairs only. Funny thing is, both devices are happily operating at 100BaseT, whereas I thought that more than 4 wires were required for 100BaseT. Is this because they're going back to a very cheap unmanaged switch? Or has it something to do with simplex / duplex operation, or what limitations have I imposed on this user?
