Some people don't have access to external machines. In an example business LAN environment, the MTA will more than likely be less restrictive as to what can be done from within the LAN (relaying being one of the most common examples). As a result, you need to test from outside this environment. One suggestion (as you've noted in a different mail) is to setup a test box connected to the external interface. The other option is to use some sort of external relay tester.
