FreeBSD doesn't allow login to root, but debian (in particular

Debian as installed here has remote ssh login directly to the root account _disabled_.
Please note that we were _not_ speaking of "allowing login to root" in any
broader sense, so you may want to re-check your Libranet box's
/etc/ssh/sshd_config file's PermitRootLogin value, if (as I suspect)
you've misunderstood.

# Authentication:
LoginGraceTime 600
PermitRootLogin yes
StrictModes yes

That answer your question?

and I'm pretty sure I didn't change it..

In fact, on my second desktop machine with libranet:
# Authentication:
LoginGraceTime 600
PermitRootLogin yes
StrictModes yes

While I may be insane from time to time, I'm hoping this is one of
my rare moments of lucidity, rather than falling out of cars.
