This seems like a DIY challenge-response system.

Yes, but a lot of spam is sent with a false return address.
Challenge-response systems such as this will send the challenge to this
false address, which be yours or mine or ilug@xxxxxxxx! These
challenge-response systems increase the amount of junk being sent.

Elrav1 seems not to be guilty of it, but many challenge-response systems
require you to visit a web page to make your response to the challenge.
Further, some of the web challenges require you to type in text from
obscured graphics (see http://www.captcha.net/) which assumes the
ability of the user's software to render graphics and the ability of the
user to see, so it excludes those with sight problems.
