The recipes could also be represented visually, but I still think it's more
intuitive to type "mail" than to locate the little picture of a letter, position
your mouse over it, click it 2 times in succession. Quickly, but not
too quickly.
One of the main point of GUIs is that it's easy to figure out what you
CAN do. If you have to type a word, you need to guess. That's my drop
down menus are such a good idea.
And of course, they mainly use words. ;)
But I agree that the "real life" methaphor has been run to it's end. The
Desktop metaphor was the start, and I saw some people trying to extend
this a lot, by having a "Basement" for configuration and stuff. But
associations like that only makes sense once you have been told about
them. It's better to have something saying "Configuration" to click on.
