[uml-user] devfs halt - odd howtos: msg#00233

Subject: [uml-user] devfs halt - odd howtos
I'm finding I'm getting the devfs freeze when I try to use a kernel I've compiled myself. I find this odd as I'm using a 2.6.1 uml, with ext2 and a 2.6.1 host kernel with ext3; fairly similar, both gentoo.

The debian 2.4 uml works fine if I unpack the .deb so I'm guessing it must be something about my kernel config, but what?

So,

- where can I find an example 2.6 uml config?
- why the difference between the html and txt guides?
- what's the strange characters all about in the txt howto? -> ("1133..11.. CChhii")

Thanks for any pointers.

html howto states:

"You're probably running a recent distribution on an old machine. I saw this with the RH7.1 filesystem running on a Pentium. The shared library loader, ld.so, was executing an instruction (cmove) which the Pentium didn't support. That instruction was apparently added later. If you run UML under the debugger, you'll see the hang caused by one instruction causing an infinite SIGILL stream.

The fix is to boot UML on an older filesystem."

txt howto states:

" Two causes for this - the old cause which isn't the problem unless
you've a seriously old host kernel

+o It's caused by a bug in the host kernel introduced in 2.4.0-test8
and backed out in test9. The fix is to run some kernel other than
    test8 as the host.

The other cause, which is far more likely these days

+o You're running a recent distribution on an old machine. I saw this
with the RH7.1 filesystem running on a Pentium. The shared library
loader, ld.so, was executing an instruction (cmove) which the
Pentium didn't support. That instruction was apparently added
later. If you run UML under the debugger, you'll see the hang
caused by one instruction causing an infinite SIGILL stream.
I have another report of this which appears not to be caused by
    either of the above."
