In between.  I have an arch layer inside UML which you rewrite in order to
port to a new arch.  Since there has only been one port of UML for a while,
it has sort of decayed.  That will be back in shape when I merge the x86_64
port.

There was once an almost working ppc port, and the code is still there.  Once
I get the port layer in good shape, a lot of the ppc port will be fitting that
code under the new interface.
