I'm even more of a newbie.

To get an 'unknown partition type' error in uml-2.6.0-test5-1, I need another argument, ubd0=<name of file with a file-system image> eg the decompress of root-fs-toms*.bz2

Does adding a ubd0= argument help?

No, adding a ubd0= seems to have no effect.

Could this be caused by a wrong setting in the kernel config? For example, do the ubd arguments need to be 'y' rather than 'm', or something along those lines?

Having followed the advice in the FAQ I still get this error, does anyone know what I might have done wrong?

Host kernel is linux-2.4.21-0.13mdk (with SKAS patch).

I have tried with different root_fs's, homemade, and downloaded with the same results.
