That would be awesome, Matt. And, whomever had the bright idea of putting
Windows-based open source programs on the LiveCD to load when in Windows had
a stroke of genius and should be bought a few virtual beers. Very savvy.
With the Save Setting options, the Live CD would be the best in the Linux
community. The new user to Linux could:
1) load some open source programs on to Windows and get used to them.
2) try out the Live CD of Ubuntu.
3) repeatedly use it by saving their settings as they grow used to it and
removed their Windows dependency.
3) Load a full installation of Ubuntu.
Add in a very easy-to-manage dual boot with Windows and you're gold.
And, this is exactly how I came to Linux:
1) downloaded Firefox and OpenOffice on to XP and used them for weeks.
2) tried out a bunch of LiveCDs.
3) came across SuSE 9.0 and it saved my settings so I used that for a few
weeks, surprisingly finding a booted back in to XP less and less and then
never.
4) loaded Linux on to a HD.
Same pattern. The value of a smartly created LiveCD is invaluable. Then,
throw in your mailouts of the LiveCD and full distro in that really nice
looking sleeve, and the marketing chain is complete.
