Jaunty uses PulseAudio and what I've found is that if you run alsamixer 
-c0 from a command-line, the PCM option may be set to 0.  Ramping that 
up to 100 might generate some sound for you.  My experience has only 
been on Lenovo laptops and Acer Aspire Ones.
