php module question

If I install a php5 module (in this case mcrypt) via synaptic, does it
automatically become available, or is there some further configuration that
needs to be done?

if I do
<?php
phpinfo( );
?>
it doesn't seem to be listed.

I can't see any useful documentation in /usr/share/doc/php5-mcrypt
