How do you plan to use it?  I finally decided to dedicate a box to 
Asterisk.  That way, I can put a softphone on my ubuntu studio, and use 
Asterisk as a switchboard on my home network.  There's a value-added 
distribution called, PBX in a Flash, or PIAF.  Good documentation is 
provided.  It uses a GUI approach.
