Same here, I often have about one month of viewing backlogged...

Not sure I agree there, something like
<programme start="200211101800" stop="200211101900" channel="387" />
seems fairly easy to edit also. I didn't mean that all the programme
details should necessarily be included, although they would be
quietly ignored if present.

I interpreted the question differently, I thought Robert Eden was
asking about what to output to feed directly into the VCR
programmer. In which case you surely don't want (2).

Yup, or by deciding to watch one of the shows later in the week when
it will be repeated, or several other ways. It gets more complex if
you have three VCRs, of which one works, one has a broken timer, and
one has no timer or Long Play, and a selection of VHS tapes with
varying amounts of free space. Quite a complex constraints
problem :-).
But I still think that the end result, the data to program the VCR
with, ought to fit into XMLTV format. I mean it's intended to be the
standard format for these things isn't it? And if it's not suitable
for the task then we can change it until it is.

So you wouldn't object to a format that had just those three pieces of
information (start time, length, channel)?
