SW-EL'05: Workshop on Applications of Semantic Web Technologies
for e-Learning
in conjuction with ICALT 2005:
The 5th IEEE International Conference on Advanced
Learning Technologies

PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MARCH 30, 2005 (EXTENDED)
*******************************************************************
This workshop will focus on the application of semantic web
technologies and standards for the needs of e-learning systems and
discuss issues related to their use for content and knowledge
components specification, effective courseware construction and
modeling the learner.
SWEL'05 is the third in a series (http://www.win.tue.nl/SW-EL/)
following the successful SW-EL'04, held in three sessions in
conjunction with three different conferences (AH 2004, The Netherland,
ITS 2004, Brazil, and ISWC 2004, Japan) and the Workshop on Concepts
and Ontologies in Web-based Educational Systems, held in conjunction
with ICCE'2002 in Auckland, New Zealand.
*******************************************************************
Workshop goals
*******************************************************************
* To discuss the current state-of-the-art in using semantic web
technologies and standards in e-learning applications.
* To attract the interest of the related research communities to the
problems in educational web-based systems and serve as an international
platform for knowledge exchange and cooperation between researchers.
*******************************************************************
Important Dates
*******************************************************************
Paper submission: March 30, 2005 (extended)
Notification: April 5, 2005
Camera-ready submission (2 pages for conf. proceedings): April 12, 2005
Camera ready (full paper for online workshop proceedings): May 15, 2005

Workshop topics
*******************************************************************
Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:
* Using ontologies and/or semantic web technologies within e-learning
applications (to achieve interoperability between educational
applications, sharable user models and knowledge components, etc.).
* Ontology engineering and knowledge representation in e-learning systems.
* Using ontologies and/or Semantic Web technologies to support authoring
of e-learning systems.
* Using Semantic Web technologies to achieve better personalization and
adaptation in e-learning systems (i.e. modularized and standardized
architectures, separation of domain models and application models, flexible
user models)..
* Using Semantic Web services for the purposes of e-learning (i.e.
authoring service, user modeling service, etc.).
* Web standards issues for e-learning, e.g. moving educational standards
such as LOM and SCORM closer to the semantic web.
* Real-world systems, case studies and empirical research for e-learning
systems.
* Semantic web-based e-learning architectures.
The topics can be approached from different perspectives:
theoretical, systems engineering, application, case study and system
evaluation, etc.

Workshop Format
*******************************************************************
This will be a half-day workshop, including 20 minute position paper
presentations and a panel discussion on selected topics from the paper
presentations.
*******************************************************************
Submission
*******************************************************************
The participants can submit position papers up to 10 pages long. The
accepted papers will be published online on the workshop website. In
addition, two-page abstracts of all accepted papers will be included
in the conference proceedings.
Submit your full papers in electronic form in (*.doc), (*.rtf) or (*.pdf)
to the workshop co-chairs at dichevad-ZhBHK6W/tTk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and
l.m.aroyo-FZ+5fisiULg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Include SW-EL@ICALT'05 in the subject line.
*******************************************************************
Workshop proceedings
*******************************************************************
The papers of the workshop will be made available online on the
workshop web site (http://www.win.tue.nl/SW-EL/). Two-page abstracts
of the accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings.
Possibilities will be investigated to publish the best workshop
papers in a special issue of a refereed journal (e.g. IJCEELL, ET&S,
etc).
