| Heh :) I'm not 100% sure about the 'seamless' metaphor. All these
| technologies are about stitching together fragments of scattered
| information into a (necessarily patchwork) composite. It seems quite
| natural on such a metaphor to expect to see the seams that join the
| parts.... (though I'd hope they're not frankenstein ugly!).

I guess it depends on what you mean by 'seamless' -- and
also what the term 'Seamless Knowledge' is meant to include.

I'm using the latter as a label for the kind of things
that the Topic Maps family of standards is designed to
make possible. These are not identical to the goals of
the Semantic Web, although there are similarities, areas
of overlap and many opportunities for synergy.

In the Topic Maps vision, a lot (but by no means all)
of what you call the "(necessarily patchwork) composite"
*will* be seamless. The concepts of subject identity and
merging are there precisely in order to make this possible.

One of the interesting things we might explore at a
Topic Maps/RDF Interoperability Workshop would be just
how the vision of Seamless Knowledge differs from that
of the Semantic Web.

I would like to take this opportunity to repeat the
invitation to hold such a workshop in Oslo this summer
(e.g. late June). Ontopia would be happy to facilitate
the hosting, e.g. at the University of Oslo. Please let
me know as soon as possible if you want to go ahead.

Best regards,

Steve
