Try this:

<a>
  <xsl:attribute name="href" select="@href"/>
  <xsl:value-of select="link"/>
</a>

You're using syntactic sugar there, if you hit a problem with that kind 
of code-optimization it is often helpful to fall back on the fully 
expanded form.
