This problem was a mis in my build script. If anyone sees this - check your build.

-now, if could only get changeType() working at runtime tor change to multiple concrete types of an abstract complex type.........

Hi Radu,
.
D:\srhtools.jar
D:\xmlbeans\trunk\build\lib\xbean.jar
D:\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\rt.jar
D:\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\tools.jar

D:\Proj\IBMCommon\build\lib\ibmcommon.jar
D:\Proj\WSBE\build\lib\ibmwsbe.jar
D:\proj\CBML\build\lib\ibmcbml.jar

is my classpath - seems I have to have xbean.jar in front of the jdk to avoid a QName version problem (?)
Not much interesting but JFC stuff on the stack - top of stack is:

Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.ClassCastException: org.apache.xmlbeans.impl.values.XmlComplexContentImpl

Also, none of my schemas use xsd 'complex content'..........

Never seen that before, but if you're getting that after just doing ".newInstance()" I'd have to assume that it's either a bug in the generated code (it would help a bunch to see it, in this case) or one of the classpath setup issues, where the runtime type found on the classpath doesn't match the compiletime type.

          ClassCastException: org.apache.xmlbeans.impl.values.XmlComplexContentImpl

          Hi,
I am getting ClassCastException: org.apache.xmlbeans.impl.values.XmlComplexContentImpl when
          calling FooDocument d=FooDocument.Factory.newInstance();

Does anyone have any Idea why I would get this?

          thanks,
          Scott
