Apparently there is no need to add the id to the instance parameter
So in the case of the vcard sample, if you use

http://localhost:8080/chiba-0.9.3/XFormsServlet?form=/forms/vcard.xml&instance=file://form/contact1.xml
at least in version 0.9.3 on my system.
