accessing html window

Hello,
   How can I access browser's window using DOM in javascript? When I 
use window.open it refers to the asv's window object and not 
browser's window thus doesn't open a new browser window. 

FYI - I am having one svg file and I am not embedding that in the 
html file. I am directly loading it in the browser.
