Maybe whomever controls the spec can agree that it is time for a 
committee on extensions to the spec.  I think it's a very good idea to 
only consider additional data types and not xml format changes, et al.  
In addition to this, an addition to the spec to require a version 
response should suffice in determining how the client is able to 
communicate with any given server.  If no response, or an invalid 
response is received, then you can assume only the original version of 
the spec is supported.

In this way you maintain absolute compatibility with the original spec.  
Datatypes currently in the spec would continue to work as before.  Some 
may define a specific format such as with dates but would still have to 
work within the old spec.  If the other end of the conversation is 
unable to specify that it supports a newer version, then fall back.

I know it's more complicated than this.  But I think the scope of usage 
of a particular client-server application would allow it to either work 
within the old spec or the enhanced one in any given conversation.
