xmlrpc_encode_request does not produce xml output string

Hello, this is beginner question:
executing:
xmlrpc_encode_request('method1','param1')
output:
method1 param1
expected:
xml formatted xml-rpc request
tried Apache 1.3.31 php 4.3.9 on Linux (configured with --with-xmlrpc)
and Windows - result the same. Am I missing something ? Thank you for
help.
