I-D references do this automatically, but of course RFC ones don't. Nor
when an I-D becomes an RFC.
Well, in general the update can't be made automatic.
What can be done easily is a check for the freshness of references, see
the latest versions of ID-Nits and
<http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/rfc2629xslt/rfc2629xslt.html#checking-references>.
