Actually the story is a little more complex. It was interesting to
follow your discussion with David, but it slightly missed the point
because you could not know that refdbd implements some nasty tricks.

First of all, refdbd uses expat to parse XML data. Expat is a
non-validating parser, so it does not make any difference to the
parser whether or not your data are valid. DTD or schema or invalid,
it simply does not matter. Expat will only complain if the data are
not well-formed.

If the elements that refdbd understands are nested appropriately (this
does not necessarily mean the input is valid against a DTD or schema),
they will be mapped to the appropriate SQL tables/columns. If elements
show up which refdbd does not know, the elements are simply ignored.

Now how is refdbd supposed to do something useful with the content
contents? There is some special code in noteshandler.c. This code
kicks in (or actually: is supposed to kick in, as we now know that
it's broke) whenever the parser comes across a descendant of
content. refdbd basically tries to re-create the element structure and
their contents from the parser data and writes them into one long
string which will eventually be stored in the database. In theory
(i.e. if the code would work) you won't literally get out what you put
in because the whitespace outside the elements is ignored (in terms of
XML this does not matter, however). But the element structure and the
whitespace within the elements should be preserved.

I'll see what I can do about the bug.

regards,
Markus
