LaTeX and PNG images

Doxygen version 1.3-rc2 on Solaris.

The Doxygen manual states the following for the \image command:

 Warning:
 The image format for HTML is limited to what your browser supports. 
 For L A T E X the image format must be Encapsulated PostScript (eps).

Using teTeX binary version 1.0.5 I have used PNG images and they are
generated correctly in my refman.pdf.

Should this part of the document be updated? Do PNG images work with
other implementations of TeX and LaTeX?
