What format were the graphics that were being included in your document?
And what was the problem with the approach you outlined above?

If your graphics are saved as PICT files, then you have another option
that might be easier:

I wrote pict2pdf to solve this problem. This is a simple command line
utility that will create pdfs from pict files that are properly cropped and
still retain their vector graphics nature.

After installing pict2pdf, a quick and dirty conversion for a latex file
that uses pict files can be done by doing

pict2pdf *.pict
perl -pi.bak -e 's/\.pict/\.pdf/' *.tex

which will create .pdf files for all the .pict files in the current directory and then
replace any occurrence of .pict in the .tex file by .pdf. If your pict files do not
end in .pict then you'll need to do some hand editing.

You can download pict2pdf from

http://sourceforge.net/projects/pict2pdf/

Hope this helps,
Scot
