Okay. I am suitably humbled: it was the environment.plist file. Now, would someone please tell me *why* it causes troubles? I originally set it up in order to pass some non-standard BIBINPUTS paths along, but it never seemed to be read; on the other hand, now I find that this was the source of my woes. "Answers, Jim, I need *answers*!"

There have been some threads on this topic on this list. If you're not scared by some heated discussion, you can have a look at the thread "Please no: [OS X TeX] set environment variables for applications" starting at <http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/MacOSX-TeX-Digests/2004/MacOSX- TeX_Digest_05-24-04.html>.

In short, the problem is that settings set in this file affect all GUI apps on your Mac, potentially creating conflicts and misbehaviours. In particular, in your case it's likely that some TeX-related paths set in the ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist file for one application has taken over the paths expected by i-Installer, causing it to fail.
