Error using \insertlecture

This foot-template definition

    \usefoottemplate{%
       \vbox{\insertlecture \hfill \insertframenumber\ of %
         \inserttotalframenumber \vskip2pt}}

gives an error:

    ERROR: Undefined control sequence.

    --- TeX said ---
    \insertlecture ->\beamer@lecturename

Still, the lecture name shows up correctly on the slide.
What am I doing wrong?
