had i even a slight idea, that the word gentoo would spur such a
feverish "opinion exchange", i'd probably keep my mouth shut. But,
since it's too late, here's my 2 cents;
Concerning the "16 year old german kid in a mailing list". I take that
this was supposed to be an attempt at mocking the gentoo community (but
no offence taken). And yet, i really do not understand why. I can
assure you, that the gentoo-users mailing list, and the gentoo forums,
are the best and definitely quickest way to get help, get _really_ good
help, and get it with a friendly twist that the gentoo community is.
On one side, i fully understand the scapegoat concept, and i have
nothing to add to that (of course i would also choose a "vendor
supported" distro, if i was given the option: "my ass or theirs"), but
on the other hand, it is very silly to mock the "16 year old german
kid", because that kid will answer your problem 10x faster than any RH
or novell support guys, who most likely does not even give a shit about
your problem, because he hates his job, and thinks that all the jerks
out there who are having problems with the linux that his employer
"supports" are just annoyances in his day, that he has to live through.
But the "kid" does it for free, and he does it good, because he _likes_
doing it. And that's the big difference that money won't buy you.
Now this might be a radical example (and i want to apologize to all of
the support staff that like their work and work hard to satisfy their
customers), but having worked 1 year as HP-UX 2nd line support for HP,
i can tell you, that customer support on the inside (the one that you
get), and customer support on the outside (the one that you buy) are
definitely 2 veeery different things.
Another thing: do you even have a slightest clue, how _easy_, _simple_
and comfortable it is to install asterisk on a gentoo system? I am
quite sure that sean knows what i am talking about, and i will bet my
ass that it is definitely _not_ so simple on any other linux.
And last, about those bugs: Do you really think, that not using gentoo
will help you avoid them? What happens, when a criticla flaw is
discovered in say, openssh? The openssh devs fix it, and then, the next
day you just sync and re-emerge, because portage has already been
updated, and you have the "bugfixed" version mere hours (installed via
your package manager) after the bug has been fixed. Now let's see that
on any other system....
and now, good night guys, it's 2:30 AM here, so im off to join my
girlfriend in dreamland... :-)
s pozdravom
