My original conclusion about the cause of this problem was wrong. It is
a more serious bug. I haven't tracked it down to the code yet but I'd
like to bring it to the attention of all developers here so we can get
more eyes on it.
Here's my bug report. I'll be working on it today and tomorrow if
needed.
