./scripts/Build-Target -cfg system results in idle process "Squashing root file-system (this may take some time) ..."

Could someone point me in the right direction..

I'm following the quick build instructions.
everything appears to build fine until it begins to create the squashfs
file

# ./scripts/Build-Target -cfg system
...
Squashing root file-system (this may take some time) ...
...

the live.squash file quickly builds to this size (306641330), then the
processs goes idle and never continues.


Base build system is Gentoo.
