t2.devel

Subject: Newbie experience

Hi there, happy to meet you !

I am looking at those "funny" things called meta distributions and there are many around, though less than distributions...

So soon there will be more and more Linux distributions to deal with... I don't know what to think about it, you know, the compatibility stuff, but anyway I like the idea of having my own system ! Well, built with the bricks of all those brilliant Linux developers...

Then I found T2 and felt interested in it because of its support of several architectures and OSes, and its design though I have to dive more deeply in it to appreciate at full !

The documentation, the book is interesting and I would surely be a buyer when it is sold !

Sometime before, I had burnt a CD with the 6.03 and could not figure out what to do with it. Had not to much time at this moment so I gave it up for a while.

Two days ago, I started again to work on it at home on my Mandriva 2007 Spring, and SVN the t2-trunk.
Selected the desktop target and downloaded everything just fine. I thought : what a wonderful tool !

Then the build : things went wrong when building linux headers, because fl_wrapper writing outside of the correct location... Don't ask me why.

So I read carefully the documentation and found that it would build better on a T2 distribution. I went to the ISOs and downloaded the last stable one : 7.0 rc. Don't know what rc means...

And things gone worth : my CDs are 700Mb ones and the image does not fit in it, 760Mb...
I have tried the overburn option in K3B but the burn stopped at 724... And the CD was dead.

I have tried to figure out how it could be possible to install directly from the iso on the disk...
Mounted the iso on a loop and copied everything to a partition on the disk and boot on it.
The thing started and complained about not being able to find the stuff on the CD. So I felt something was telling it to search the CD and not the disk where it started. And I tried to open the initrd.img but I could not do with gunzip and mounting it as ext2...
Finally I bought 800Mb CDs and burnt one then installed it, well I tried...

It ended up with the mailing list where I found I had to install the 6.01 version, what I did last night.

So I have installed the T2 6.01 minimal in a partition, copied the t2-trunk from my Mandriva/home/los to a new ext3 partition (cp -a complained about some attributes it was not able to set) and mounted the partition to the T2 minimal.

Then it was possible to run the ./scripts/Config and the Build-Target and...

The build was going on after the linux-headers and I went to bed letting it continue all night long... but it stopped when building the linux2.6.22, after 41 successful packets built.

I will try again during the week end but when you have any suggestion...

I like this project anyway. Great job !
I think I am going to learn a lot here...
