Just a follow-up to this.  I have opened an enhancement request regarding this.  The number is  MR03052327, if anyone is interested.

We would definately be interested in this feature being added to Tivoli.

btw - I opened a PMR with IBM this morning - "PMR number 80459 001 866 was successfully created with IBM Support. It contained the following Short Description: Software Distribute option 'only if user not logged on'".  So we can reference this if need be ?

Many thanks to everyone else who replied to this thread, very much appreciated.

Lisa.

The idea that SMS has those options built in should be passed to Tivoli and maybe open up an enhancement request.  I really think that a built-in function for this would be a good idea.  Right now we use a _vbscript_ to check for a logged on user and have that run as part of the package.  Would anyone else think that this would be valuable in CM?  I can open the request and give the list the details if anyone else is interested.

If you are doing this during off hours, you could reboot the workstation (with the users approval). I've found that rebooting is usually the simplest & most effective way to handle these sorts of issues if that option is available.

Hi Tracy,

Thank you for your reply.  I'm not sure I explained myself fully, the question from our developer was "can we create a package within Software Distribution that will only distribute to PC's that are not logged on?".  The reason the user should not be logged on is because this new package is an update is to Microsoft Word and we want to ensure Word isn't open when the package is distributed (it causes problems to Word).  But perhaps we are going about this the wrong way? If so, if anyone knows of a better way of doing this I'd be very grateful to hear...  if not I have already passed on Celil's note to the developer, so hopefully that will provide the solution.

Thanks again.

Lisa.

Tivoli SD works that way by default.

It actually does not care if you are logged on or logged off as it is running as a service which as long as it is connected to the network, the service will start and connect to the gateway when the services start on the systems (this assumes that the tivoli service is set to automatic which it is by default).  Once connected, the distro may begin.  I prefer this as launched/running applications can get in the way of installations.

Tivoli does not know if you are logged on or logged off and can create a dilemma when trying to determine how you should reboot/restart a computer. i.e. notify the user, etc.

[tme10] Question re Software Distribution 4.2.1

Hello list, I have been asked if Software Distribution can distribute packages to machines that are not logged on.   Apparently within SMS there is a drop down menu that says (something along the lines of)

        Distribute :

only if user is logged on

only if user is not logged on

 either

Do you know if this facility is available in Software Distribution (Config Manager 4.2.1 + FP1)
(windows 2000)

Thanks in advance.
