Subject: RE: [INV] cold backup of Inventory database

Hi Rick,

When downstream collectors try to send data to the Data Handler it
automatically start (even though you've stopped it with `wcollect -h`).
You could off-link the downstream collectors before the cold backup is
started. Then, stop the Data Handler.

There are three different methods I can think of to prevent the Data Handler
from accepting any data from down stream collectors...

Reference Inventory User's Guide:
1. 'wcollect -x` option for the traditional method
of off-linking collectors.
2. 'wcollect -t 0 @InvDataHandler:inv_data_handler'
3. 'wcollect -o 0 @ManagedNode:<all Collector Dispatchers>`

Once the cold backup is completed, on-link the downstream collectors by
either using 'wcollect -x' command (passing -x "") or resetting the
collectors to their original input/output threads
( -t <origval> or -o <origval>).

Allow some time between off-linking the collectors, gracefully halting your
Data Handler, and stopping the DB.

Probably the third method (`wcollect -o`) will be best in your situation.
And, you may want to consider on-linking your collectors in stages - not to
flood the Data Handler with *.DAT files from every collector, all at once.

Just some ideas -

/Jana

Subject: [tme10] [INV] cold backup of Inventory database

Hi List,

Our Oracle DBAs want to do cold backups of our Inventory database. What can
I do to prevent (RIM-related) errors in our Tivoli logs? Will stopping the
datahandler with
wcollect -h graceful @InvDataHandler:inv_data_handler
(and starting it after the backup) be sufficient?

With kind regards,
