RE: notification by SMS: msg#00627sysutils.tivoli.general
Sami, I've done a few of these and fortunately we have some very good SMS gateway providers in Aust that can deliver cheaply and seamlessly across different mobile phone networks. Most dispatch SMS via e-mail and some can even provide auto failover to a modem using something like the TAP protocol if your internet connection becomes unavailable. If you can't find a suitable SMS gateway provider in your area and you are keen to investigate tethering a mobile phone to a TEC server then you may be interested in taking a look at the GNOKII GNU project ... http://www.gnokii.org It could be argued that paging/SMS can be better managed from an ITIL compliant problem ticketing system integrated to TEC. Some of these tools already include paging modules and escalation handling. Of course you could always craft your own TEC rule set to provide the same level of functionality. I guess you have to weigh up the cost and care factors. cheers, Gino D'Ambrosio -----Original Message----- From: Sami Chouaib [mailto:schouaib@xxxxxxx] Sent: Fri 30/04/2004 3:21 AM To: tme10@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: Subject: Re: [tme10] notification by SMS Thanks Brian for your reply, Have you more details about how to implement the solution with cellphone or a specific equipment with serial connection (GSM modem)?. Some providers have email gateways… I know in the US that SprintPCS has an email gateway. You can also send messages via a Bluetooth enabled cellphone or via a web service for a fee. I’m not too sure about who provides these services or how much they cost. Keep in mind that with some providers, SMS message delivery is less reliable than text pagers. In a previous job, we experimented with pagers and SMS enabled phones for on-call staff… SMS messages were consistently delivered 5-30 minutes later than text pagers. This was five years ago with a US provider that no longer exists, so your mileage may vary. Brian J.
