Why not use --link-dest when .sync exists?: msg#00079

Subject: Why not use --link-dest when .sync exists?

Dear rsnapshot people,

Thank you /very/ much for adding sync_first! I use rsnapshot to back
up my computer to an external disk. Sometimes, something goes wrong
in the middle of the backup and I have to troubleshoot it by hand.
Before sync_first, rsnapshot would already have rotated the backups
and deleted the oldest one, and it would be a pain to get it to resume
from where it left off. Now I run "rsnapshot sync" as many times as
necessary followed by "rsnapshot occasional" once everything is ready
to go.

That said: What was the rationale behind the changes in revision 1.313
of rsnapshot-program.pl? --link-dest always improves speed and
doesn't seem to have anything to do with whether the .sync directory
existed previously. In fact, over the course of a single snapshot,
rsnapshot passes --link-dest for the first "backup" entry in the
configuration file but not for subsequent ones. This can't possibly
be the intended behavior.

Matt
