Conditional exclude

There is a big directory (and constantly changing...since it's a mail store 
directory on a mail server) on this server that takes more than an hour to 
backup.  During the backup, the server becomes so slow that mail operation 
becomes very sluggish and non-responsive.

Is it possible to exclude this directory for hourly and daily operation.  But 
include it for weekly and monthly?
