If you have this problem again you could try adding --modify-window=2
or similar to rsync_long_args and see if that helps.

I tried NTFS and FAT32 as backup filesystems on Linux, and had trouble.

I have had no trouble with ext3 filesystems, so I use them. I have
a cron job to unmount/fsck/mount the filesystems once a month as a
precaution, so the filesystems don't get to 6 months without being
checked and cause a delay if the machine is rebooted.
