This is, quite a bit slower than using GNU cp but at least it'll work. 1.2.9 handles the new versions of GNU cp correctly. As for checking behaviours, it's not necessary, as 1.2.9 will work with both species of GNU cp. What counts as 'optimal' will depend on your local requirements, so we can't really have a script tell you what optimal is.
