I used to write my own shell scripts to wrap around rsync.

Then I found rsnapshot and realised how much easier it is to 
have a standard piece of software that wraps around rsync to
handle things like lock files, logs, keeping previous backups,
checking whether rsync was partially successful, etc.

Now I just use rsnapshot instead of writing my own shell scripts.
