I'm not sure. I'm also not sure if it would be run manually or actually part of rsnapshot to check before each run that the settings are "correct".. But at the moment a simple script external to rsnapshot that checks the behaviour of cp and rsync and advises of correct setting with a few different released versions of rsnapshot would be very handy,e specially for those people running it on different platforms (Linux vs BSD).
