Links, oh my!: msg#00002

Subject: Links, oh my!

Hail All. Congrats on a utility I had on my list to write! :) Good thing
I looked before coding.

I've been using rsnapshot for a few months now, and I have a situation
that raises some questions.

Example file structure on client:
/foo
/foo/bar
/foo/bar/you
/foo/bar/you_chou -> /foo/man/chou
/foo/man/chou

The key is that /foo/bar/you_chou is a soft link to /foo/man/chou. After
this was backed up by rsnapshot I got an error while it was trying to do
a "chgrp" on the server of /foo/bar/you_chou, saying "No such file or
directory". On the server the link /foo/bar/you_chou properly points to
/foo/man/chou, but of course /foo/man/chou does not exist on the server.
So the chgrp fails. Not a terribly big deal, but a bunch of links would
be quite verbose in their failing.

This however, raises a question. I have recently removed the link and
the directory the link was pointing to. I STILL receive the same error.
What concerns me is that in the latest daily which is supposedly 3 days
past when I removed the culprits, I still see them! Is rsync not using
--delete? Are my backups not reflecting all of the changes that are
occurring? Is it simply capturing additions? Or is rsnapshot dying on
this error and I really don't have a complete backup (Oh MY!)

Let's discuss!

Cheers,

Ben Lake
